Pain Management and Rehab Training

Pain doesn’t have to control your life. Stout-Heart Fitness, providing pain and rehab training in our Lancaster gym, takes a unique approach to reducing pain and improving movement by strengthening muscles and retraining the brain to use the muscles correctly and to use the right muscles for the intended function. Whether you’re dealing with back, knee, hip, or shoulder pain, we’re here to help you move, feel, and live better with our unique strength training for pain management and rehab programs.

Pain is a Signal

Pain is your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong. It’s often caused by using the wrong muscles to complete a movement or by unaddressed muscle imbalances. Left untreated, these issues can lead to chronic discomfort, mobility challenges, and even more serious conditions.

Many of our athletes (clients) come to us after trying the traditional paths: OTC medications, doctor visits for pain relief (and pain medications), massage therapy, or chiropractic care. By the time they reach Stout-Heart Fitness, they’ve often been living with pain for months or years, rating their discomfort as a 3 or higher on a scale of 1 to 5. That’s where we step in with our proven approach that addresses the root cause of the problem – weak muscles and your body relying on the wrong muscles for movement.

The Stout-Heart Fitness Strength Training for Pain Management Process

Every new athlete begins their Stout-Heart Fitness journey to pain relief with an in-depth assessment to identify the cause of pain and continues with a customized program to mitigate it. Our process includes:

A Background Interview: We’ll discuss what brought you in, your physical history (including injuries and surgeries), and even congenital conditions, such as missing or underdeveloped muscles.

Movement Analysis: We’ll observe your movement patterns to identify which muscles are compensating incorrectly. Once we identify the potential issue, we’ll test our hypothesis by engaging the correct muscles. Engagement involves having you work the muscles until they weaken. The body switches to the muscles designed for that movement at that point. You may notice immediate changes even during this initial session.

Customized Program of Strengthening and Rebuilding Muscle Memory: Based on what we learn in the initial assessment, we’ll design a personalized program to:

  • Improve muscle engagement and strengthen the muscles related to the pain.
  • Rebuild muscle memory to use the correct muscles for movement through repetition and progressive exercises.

For example, if smaller, overcompensating muscles are used to complete a movement, we’ll guide your body to “wear out” those muscles so the brain activates the proper ones. With repetition, your brain learns to default to these healthier movement patterns.

Ongoing Training for Long-Term Relief

Repetition and progressive strength-building are key to achieving long-term results. Because it is common for our clients to experience relief during the assessment and early training, there’s a natural temptation to stop training too soon. As a result, progress quickly disappears as the brain reverts to using the wrong muscles for movement. We encourage our athletes to commit to training until their bodies return to their proper functioning state.

During our ongoing strength training for pain management and rehab, we guide you through sessions designed to:

  • Strengthen the right muscles for the movement.
  • Prevent smaller, weaker muscles from overcompensating.
  • Reinforce proper movement patterns to eliminate pain and prevent future injuries.

Why Stout-Heart Fitness is Different

At Stout-Heart Fitness, we go beyond traditional approaches like physical therapy and generalized physical training. Here’s how:

  • Focus on Tension Over Form: We prioritize muscle engagement rather than just perfecting the appearance of a movement. Proper tension ensures that the right muscles are doing the work.
  • Reprogramming Movement Patterns: Your brain and nervous system may default to incorrect movement patterns even after an injury heals. We retrain it to use the correct muscles for sustainable results.
  • Strengthening and Engagement: Physical therapy often addresses mobility but rarely focuses on building strength or retraining the brain and nervous system. We do both.

Common Pain Areas and Our Solutions

About 70% of our athletes come to us with back pain. The remaining 30% are experiencing discomfort and pain in the knees, hips, or shoulders. Regardless of the location of the pain or how the pain developed, we apply our core principles of muscle strengthening and recreating “muscle memory” for proper movement to produce lasting relief.

Back Pain

  • Causes: Weak lower abdominal and oblique muscles force the erector muscles to overcompensate, locking up the spine.
  • Solution: Strengthen the core musculature and retrain the brain to stabilize the spine correctly with the muscles intended for that purpose.

Knee Pain

  • Causes: Weak quads, hamstrings, or post-surgery imbalances. Athletes suffering chronic knee pain often raise concerns about joint replacements, which may be unnecessary when proper strengthening might resolve the pain.
  • Solution: Build strength in the surrounding muscles to reduce pain, increase knee longevity, and delay or prevent replacement surgery.

Hip Pain

  • Causes: Weak lower abdominals and glutes, leading to pain during flexion, extension, or prolonged standing.
  • Solution: Strengthen the core musculature and glutes to improve movement and reduce pain.

Shoulder Pain

  • Causes: Rotator cuff tears, frozen shoulder, or dislocations destabilizing the shoulder joint.
  • Solution: Targeted strength training to stabilize the joint and improve functionality, such as lifting or overhead movement.
