At Stout-Heart Fitness, we excel at training neurodivergent people of all ages. You’ll notice that we use “athlete” to describe the incredible individuals who train with us. This term reflects their strength, determination, and unique potential. Every session is an opportunity to celebrate growth, whether mastering a movement, building confidence, or developing resilience. Calling them athletes shifts the focus from challenges to achievements, inspiring pride and a sense of accomplishment.
Benefits for Neurodivergent Athletes
Our personalized programs empower neurodivergent people to become athletes by addressing their physical, emotional, and social needs. Through carefully tailored physical training, we help athletes:
- Strengthen their mind-body connection for improved coordination and body awareness.
- Develop confidence and resilience in the face of challenges.
- Enhance social skills through positive interactions with trainers and peers.
- Build a foundation for greater independence in everyday life.
Our athletes gain tools to thrive in everyday situations by strengthening neural pathways and promoting self-regulation.

Activities in Training for Neurodivergent Individuals

Each athlete’s journey begins with a comprehensive assessment, allowing us to design a program tailored to their unique abilities and goals. Activities include:
- Core Strengthening to build stability, prevent injury, and increase body awareness. We’ve found that functional exercises like kettlebell “farmer’s walks” and sandbag carries provide these benefits to our athletes.
- Intensity Training to improve interoception and proprioception, and create a balance between physical and mental effort. When our athletes perform high-effort movements such as sled pushes and rope pulls, they develop much better mind-body connections and the benefits they bring.
- Social Skills Development to foster calmness, trust, interpersonal communication, and collaboration so that each athlete can learn to navigate social situations. Understanding that social interaction skills are indispensable, we include positive interactions and team-based exercises that enable our athletes to engage and interact with the world around them confidently.
These activities are carefully designed to engage athletes, challenge them at their own pace, and provide opportunities for success. Because each athlete progresses at the rate they are capable of, we encourage parents to be patient and celebrate every accomplishment, no matter how small.
Frequency and Duration
Once we have assessed your athlete, we develop a plan that recommends the appropriate frequency of training sessions. We determine the ideal frequency by balancing consistency with flexibility to support steady progress. As each athlete progresses, we reassess and adjust the frequency of visits as needed to support continual growth and achievement.
Just as we determine the appropriate frequency of training sessions, we also recommend the ideal duration of each session. Depending on the athlete’s needs and capabilities, a session may last 30, 45 or 60 minutes. We determine the session length to offer enough time for meaningful engagement without overwhelming the athlete. As with frequency, we continually evaluate session lengths and adjust them to meet each athlete’s needs and comfort.
Our Programs for Neurodivergent Individuals
At Stout-Heart Fitness, you won’t find cookie-cutter predefined programs that try to force-fit each neurodivergent athlete into the routine. Our “programs” are individually designed, and each is as unique as the athlete it serves. For example, the same program won’t work for ADHD and autism athletes. They each need a specific focus. This approach ensures that the athlete is challenged appropriately while feeling supported every step of the way. Our personal approach empowers athletes and strengthens family bonds.
The core and foundation of each program consists of strength training and intensity training, a combination we’ve found to be effective in improving the mind-body link and leading to greater confidence, skill in accomplishing daily tasks, and resilience in handling interactions and experiences both routine and unexpected.
While progress is almost universally experienced, the unique nature of training neurodivergent athletes means each athlete’s outcomes will be different but commensurate with their capabilities.

Respect for the Athletes and Parents
We are committed to creating a supportive and inclusive environment for our athletes and their families. From the initial assessment to ongoing progress updates, we emphasize open communication with parents and guardians. We also offer detailed progress reports that can be shared with Regional Centers for potential funding support.
Respect, trust, and partnership are at the heart of everything we do. Together, we can help your athlete thrive in training and life.
